The Foundation
Legacy is a living practice.
In my last post, I stated I’d share more about the Empowered Legacy Framework. While the framework holds the structure, I will begin with the vision and mission that serve as the foundation of Empowered Legacy, both of which were mentioned in the Why Empowered Legacy? section of my last post.
As I reflected on my professional and personal experiences, I recalled that the environments where people tended to thrive most were those where they were valued, seen, and heard. This is no new theory and seems like common sense.
Yet the reality of being valued, seen, and heard—when lost in the demands of other priorities—erodes the climate and culture of any home, organization, or community.
The Vision
Empowered Legacy envisions spaces and communities where people are valued, seen, and heard, and where they are empowered to create lasting impact in the lives of those they serve and lead.
Spaces and Communities
Spaces and communities are any environments where people interact, from how individuals relate inwardly to themselves to how they engage with others in groups and organizations.
“Are” vs. “Feel”
When crafting the vision statement, it was important to distinguish between environments where people “are” vs. “feel” valued, seen, and heard.
When considering spaces where people “are” valued, seen, and heard, it’s the intentional acts people use to ensure others are genuinely supported. This often rests in an organization’s vision, mission, and belief statements, policies, protocols, and procedures. Most importantly, it rests in the way people are consistently and equitably treated.
Feelings are subjective and filtered through our beliefs and experiences. We can “feel” a way about an environment, and the opposite is also true, both positively and negatively. A space can be supportive, and yet we feel it is not, and a space can be toxic, and we believe that it isn’t—all because of how we are filtering the environment through our beliefs and experiences.
Valued, Seen, and Heard
These three words are the anchor to Empowered Legacy’s vision:
Valued means that people have worth and matter regardless of position, rank, or title.
Seen means that people are acknowledged, not invisible, ignored, or overlooked.
Heard means that people’s voices are important and considered.
Being valued, seen, and heard does not replace structure or order. Instead, it ensures that people are supported to the best of an organization’s ability, both individually and collectively. This does not mean that everyone will respond in the same way. There will be individuals who will remain dissatisfied without engaging in what will move things forward.
Empowered to Create Lasting Impact
According to Merriam-Webster, empower means to give someone the authority, confidence, and ability to act.1 When people are valued, seen, and heard in the context of organizational structure, it strengthens their willingness to operate in their knowledge, skills, and abilities without fear of negative consequences. This strength is reflected in their daily words, actions, and the ways of treating others that leave a lasting impact—their legacy.
The Mission
Empowered Legacy’s mission reflects how the vision is carried out in practice:
We empower individuals and organizations to cultivate supportive environments rooted in well-being, purpose, and humanity, while recognizing the legacy they build through everyday choices and actions.
The Framework
The Empowered Legacy Framework provides the structure for this work.
Competencies gained through my lived experiences and the experiences of others, along with collaboration with experts in their fields, became the foundation of Empowered Legacy’s core beliefs. These beliefs form the Empowered Legacy Framework and guide how we serve individuals and organizations.
From the classroom to the boardroom and everywhere in between, Empowered Legacy’s core beliefs are designed to empower people to show up as their authentic selves, ready to be their best for themselves, their organizations, and those around them.
I will highlight the core beliefs that anchor this framework in my next post.
